In 1985, as public awareness of the growing number of people with food allergies, intolerances and lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and obesity was increasing, not only were there insufficient special dietary products on the market, but availability was limited to independent health food stores. Barb O’Brien (founding director) saw an enormous opportunity to meet this emerging health issue with the first, truly dedicated range of free from foods. This insight lead to the creation of the Freedom Foods brand.
Quickly becoming the health food market leader as a trusted one-stop shop for gluten free alternatives, Freedom Foods research and innovation resulted in the development of more than 80 products, consisting of biscuits, cereals, bakery mixes, nutritional snacks, frozen meals, savoury snacks and spreads suitable for people with multiple allergies. Barb’s passion and dogged determination to see these products become easily accessible within mainstream retailers, landed the Freedom Foods range both on shelf and as pioneers of today’s health food aisle.
Following the sale of Freedom Foods, Barb joined forces with her family in 2009 to custom build the first large scale, totally dedicated nut free and gluten free biscuit manufacturing facility in Australia.
